Turkey Mountain Trails — North Trailhead

The north trailhead is the entry point most Tulsans hit first when they're heading into Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness — 300 acres of forested trails wedged between Riverside Drive and Highway 75, just across the Arkansas River from the Gathering Place. It's the closest thing Tulsa has to real backcountry within city limits, and the fact that you can be under thick oak canopy ten minutes after leaving downtown is a big part of why locals are so protective of it.

Trails here run the full range: flat creekside paths that work for a casual walk, technical rocky sections that mountain bikers come across town for, and steeper climbs that open up to views of the river and the Tulsa skyline. The tree cover keeps things noticeably cooler than open ground in summer, though August is still August — plan accordingly. Trails are color-coded and shared between hikers, runners, and cyclists, so pay attention to who's coming around the bend.

This is a spot people fold into their regular routine — a Saturday morning run, a quick after-work ride, a place to bring out-of-town visitors who assume Tulsa is flat. The north trailhead has parking and is the standard launch point for the Yellow Trail and connections into the wider network. Come after a hard rain and you'll find slick clay and standing water; come on a cool fall weekend and you'll share the lot with half of midtown.
