One of only a handful of structures in the Greenwood District that survived the 1921 Race Massacre — Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church stands as both a place of worship and a monument to resilience. The original basement, where community members sheltered during the massacre, is preserved. The church remains an active congregation and a spiritual anchor for the neighborhood. Visitors are welcome, and the history embedded in these walls is sacred.
