Center of the Universe

The Center of the Universe is a small concrete circle set into the pedestrian bridge at 1st Street and Boston Avenue, and it's one of those Tulsa oddities that sounds made up until you try it yourself. Stand in the middle, say something, and your voice bounces back at you amplified and slightly warped — but step a few feet outside the ring and you hear nothing unusual. Nobody has produced a fully satisfying explanation for the acoustic quirk, which is part of the appeal.

The bridge itself spans the old rail cut just north of downtown, connecting the edge of the Brady Arts District area to the rest of downtown. It's a quick stop rather than a destination — most people spend five or ten minutes testing the echo, then wander over to the Artificial Cloud sculpture (the tall rust-colored totem right next to the circle by Robert Haozous) or continue on toward Guthrie Green, Cain's Ballroom, or the shops along Main. If you're already downtown for a First Friday art crawl or a show, it's an easy detour worth folding in.

It's free, always open, and takes about as long as you want to give it. Bring a friend so one of you can stand outside the circle and confirm they hear your voice completely normally while you're hearing something strange bouncing around your own head. That contrast is the whole trick.
